Terlepas dari norma gender yang kaku, sejumlah film abad ke-20 menunjukkan perubahan susbtil dalam caranya merepresentasikan gender. Pada umumnya terdapat kepercayaan bahwa “laki-laki adalah maskulin dan perempuan adalah feminin”, sehingga ketika serorang individu laki-laki terlihat kurang maskulin ataupun seorang perempuan terlihat kurang feminin dengan tidak mengekspresikan gender mereka sesuai dengan stereotip yang ada, mereka dianggap tidak wajar.
